I have the same color m3 as you, and the reason I wanted to change colors is because my hood and whole driver's side had been keyed. When I got the estimate of 3 grand, I figured, for another 4k I could have a whole different color. It's not that easy. Forget about the resale value, I personally never factored that in because in a few years the only people that will be buying e36 m3s are the same crowd that destroyed the mystique of Supras, Porsches, RX7s, etc. This has already occured to a certain extent, but will get worse with time. For these people, they won't have a clue what to look for, just as long as it's an m3 because that's the car that burned them on the highway years earlier. Sorry for that digression, back to what I was saying. The labor alone for removing and re-installing the engine, and this is assuming you are not friends with the shop, is 2500 bucks. Next, let's say you stayed with the same color, it would still cost you another 5-7 grand for a top of the line paint job. Finally, the engine, door jambs, and trunk need to be painted, which isn't an easy task and probably needs removing the panels to do it right. You are looking at an 8-12k job for it to be done right. By this I mean competition quality for shows, or, so that the bimmer enthusiast wouldn't care that it had been repainted. That's the end of my rant, and by the way, the nicest color if you do happen to repaint: Audi Pearl White. Good luck, and email me if you have any more questions.
