I have some very newbie, basic questions about the first E36 M3's.

First, what are the problem areas as far as high mileage and long term maintenance are concerned? Are there any infamous problems like electrical gremlins or such that will fail after a few years? I really don't know very much about the marque, other than some people say they're reliable, and others say they nickel and dime you to death after they're a few years old.

Second, what's a reasonable price for one of these cars? I'm definitely not interested in a slushbox, and, IIRC, the auto M3's weren't introduced until a couple of years into the model run. I have seen one example in the Auto Trader that the owner wants $22K for. It's a theft recovery, and claims there is no damage to the structure of the car. That's the lowest price I've seen so far. Worth it, or should I run screaming into the woods at the words "Salvage title"?

Third, can someone recommend a non biased BMW specialist mechanic in the San Diego area? It's so I can have a prospective car inspected for any impending mechanical failures.

If all these questions have been covered in a FAQ, could someone please point me to it?

Thanx,
Terry
