Black is a popular M3 color and for the reasons Seth stated it is frowned upon to paint a car a different color. is your car.

I'm not sure what color would look best, but I'm positive that your resale value would drop by around $5,000 if you do that. First, no matter how good the body shop is, they aren't going to take off all of your body panels and paint them front and back, as is done by the factory. This means that you'll probably have a different color when looking under the trunk lid, under the hood, in the door jams, ... . Second, even if you completely repaint a car the same color that it was, you're opening up a jar of worms. Any car dealer, or educated car buyer, will be able to tell if the car has been repainted. If I saw a car with all panels painted, including the roof, I'd be concerned that the car was in a SERIOUS wreck. My first guess would be a rollover. On a sidenote, can you just go to the DMV and change the registration on your car? I assume so, but I'm curious. My suggestion would be not to do it. First, see if there's anyway you can rejuvenate the paint without repainting. Second, if you have to, repaint it the original color. I'd really shy away from repainting the car a different color. By the way, if you have no intention of reselling this car ever, then go for it. If you like the way it looks, and resale value is no longer important, I guess that your opinion is all that matters. Let us know what you do.
