It could be that with the cooler weather your inside temperature required that some warm air was needed which caused the coolant to be circulated through the heater core. Being that during the summer the heater core wasn't circulating coolant and now it may have not been full which required some of the coolant to take up that missing void.

My wife's E46 328i did that just last week. I added a little water and now it's fine.

When I turn on my car, OBC says I am low on coolant. I peak into the resovoir reveals that though I am not at the max, I am not below the min. Any else see this before?
