Itís funny because the system they talk about, you have to do all that drilling and "modifying" aka: permanently destroying the headlamp. There a lot of retrofit kits that are plug and play systems. The xenon arc tube fits into the stock 9006 holes via a small and simple adapter. There is no drilling, filing, gluing etc. Its 100% non-permanent and non intrusive, and furthermore you donít have to cut any wires to make it work. Your stock harness is already set. So if you ever want to sell the car, it takes about 1 minute to revert back to stock halogen. The system I speak of costs $600 and uses Hella ballasts and Philips arc tubes. I neither have one of those systems, or even an E36 (I've got an E32) but hope to get an E36 M3 soon. Now, European ellipsoids use H1ís right? I think in that case you have to modify the housing. Hope this sheds some light on the subject - hehehe get it. ok I know that was bad!
