The ignition has been turned off and the key is pulled out. There is this clinking and pinging sound comming from the engine. Yeah my friend is probably thinking of his car, a 00 Civic SI. Is this pinging normal after the key is pulled out?

Are you turning the ignition off and you still here engine noise or are you referring to the expansion/contraction noises from your exhaust system?? Also, 95 and up M3s have hydraulic lifters, therefore the valves do not need any adjusting whatsoever. Your friend is likely thinking of solid lifters found on the previous generation M3s.
