Sounds like you're a respectful guy of the law and that's cool...

here's my take and it's worth a try...

Take pictures of the road...most noteably the speed limit signs...

You say you thought the speed limit was 45mph.
Find that sign.

The fins the sign that says 30 mph. (Betcha it was the yellow sign before the turn). If so, that's not the speed limit, that's a marker suggesting a safe speed for that turn.

Next, after the turn, find the next speed limit sign. If it sayd 45mph.

You win.

CA law says the maximum speed limit on a non-highway road is 55mph. So you at least stand a chance here.

Next, the law states that where there is no posted limit, it's up to you to drive at a safe speed.

If there are no homes, kids or business buildings, I'd agree with you, I'd think the speed limit was 45mph.
