"auto door locks"... do you mean keyless entry? If so, you do need the alarm system for that. However, there may be a cheaper aftermarket alternative if the BMW alarm is too much.
Also, yes you do have to hold the button down to close it. Only the E46 3 series have the 1 touch closing.
