The position the officers were in were the '98' position. Police jargon for '11-98' - radio code for lets meet. As far as who used the rdar, its irrelevent. One could have radared you and the other could have written the ticket (perfectly acceptable as long as both testify in court). The other thing is that a radar works such that the beam comes out of the gun and is typically 4 inches long initially (if my memory serves me correctly). For every foot the beam travels, I believe that it widens by 4 inches. So theoretically, it would get wider and encompass your entire car. This can sometimes be used as a defense if there were more cars on the roadway near you. The beam may have picked up another vehicle in its path but as you mentioned, you were the only car on the road. As far as calibration goes, there are two methods used. The radar has a built in calibration check and only requires you to push a button for a few seconds to validate that it works. This should be done after each stop and prior to the first. The second requires a tuning fork and is typically only done when the radar is initially checked out for the day.
