I've owned both - the M3 is light years ahead of the old M5, and so much more nimble. (the E28 M5 platform is nearly 20 years old) If you need a 4-door, get a 97-98 M3 sedan or a 91-93 M5.

The '88 M5/M6 engine was rated at 256 hp. Repair costs are very high, which is one of the top reasons they're so cheap.
