I had the same problem with my 97 M3/2. The dealer replaced the sending unit once. If you check the archives, you will find a solution. When you get gas, ALWAYS turn the engine off and take out the key from the ignition. You can leave the key out or put it back in but do not turn it to any position. Since I have started doing this the problem has not returned.
