What good is a W12 or W engine config?(VW) (archive)

I was reading at fantasycars.com that VW will produce a W12 sports car. So, what good is the W configuration? Why not use a v12? It seems like a W would have more components to deal with (eight cam shafts!?!?). Compact I suppose.
