Craig,
I drive an A4 Quattro. I also have a Porsche Carrera 4 (AWD), Lexus LX
470. I use to have a Mitsubishi Montero (not the sport, the big one) and a
97 BMW M3 with traction control. The Audi, hands down, performs better
that all of these in adverse conditions. Second would be the M3 then the
Lexus. The Montero and C4 are about the same, just different quirks. But
the real hero is definitely the Audi. Not only will the Audi do what your
Explorer will do, it will do it faster. Think of it as more as a European
rally car. The first bad weather we had, I took mine out to test it's
limits. They are significantly farther out there than the others except
maybe the BMW. The lower center of gravity helps. The only gotcha that I
have found is that since it handles so well in the snow and ice, you don't
realize how bad things are until you try to stop. That is where Audi
performs like most everyone else's anti-lock breaking. I have not driven
the S4, but I could not imagine it being any different.
