A lean condition should not cause smoke. I'm assuming you mean smoke from the exhaust. What color was the smoke? Did it only occur under acceleration (all accel or just hard?) or what?

On a force fed motor (SC or Turbo), lean is generally very bad! Lean leads to dramatically increased combustion temperatures and does thing like burn valves, pistons, etc. Hopefully, that was not the case, and you're ok.

The mechanic should be able to tell you what the CE light was for. There's a series of codes that give info on why the light came on. Ask!

Really hard to make any guesses with so little information.
