While I don't think I was "screwed" when I drove away in a new 325i/SP, I was sorely disappointed to discover after break-in that the car felt so much bigger and heavier than a '98 318i. The straight-six engine in the new car is wonderful, perhaps its best feature, but doesn't quite make up for the car's lethargic responses and extra flab.

The steering in the 325, for instance, feels heavily filtered and non-linear. Steering feel and response in my old E36 318i was just about perfect: nicely weighted, linear, and very communicative. The new car is accurate and crisp, if a bit woollier in tight corners than the older and smaller car, but less involving. On twisty roads that were great fun in the old car the new car feels aloof and connected rather indirectly to the road -- not as much fun. It's not as planted-but-still-lively as the old car was.

The 3-series has grown up and lost the vim and vigor of youth.
