A fellow M3 owner I met at an autocross told me he had the same thing happen to his 97.

The dealer welded everything back together and things were fine for the 2 years since the repair.

As for the noise. The shock mounts are known to wear by 60,000 miles. It is probably the mounts and not the tower.

FYI: Yes it is covered under warranty. I would have the dealer write exactly what was done to the shock tower in case this problem re-appears.

I have a 1999 M3 with 36,000 miles. I have taken the car to the dealership in order to correct a noise coming from the rear right. They told me that the shock tower was cracking where the shock mounts were located. They said that it was NOT covered under warranty, but they fixed it at no charge by welding the cracked area and adding an additional metal plate. The problem is the left rear is now making the same noise (2 days after the right side was fixed)....HAS ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS PROBLEM???...IF SO WHAT HAVE YOU DONE ABOUT IT?....BTW...THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN RACED NOR HAS IT EVER BEEN TAKEN TO THE TRACK. PLEASE HELPPPPPP!!!!
