If it is a clattering sound it is most likely the brake pads. The brake pads have retaining clips (3 prongs) on the backing plate that secure the pad to the caliper piston. If the prongs are not bent out enough to get a good hold on the cylinder the pad will bounce around in the caliper. The backing plates on the pad will make a heck of a lot of clatter as they bang into the caliper bracket and the caliper fist.

You can pretty easily get under the back of the car and use your finger to push around the backing plate to see if it moves easily. The fix is to bend the prongs our farther.

The other possibility is that the rear shock mounts are gone. The symptoms for this is usually more of a thumping noise.

Has anyone out there come across this? I can't figure out what it is. I think its related to shock or strut because its worse on bumpy roads.
