I ran a carfax on my 94 325i to find that in 96 it showed 84k miles then in 98 registered with 42k miles. I called BMW dealership and was able to determine through service records, and tracking down the previous owner, that the 84k miles was a typo by the department that handles registration and it should have been 24k in 96. I pointed this out to the dealer (non-BMW dealer) and he said that it had to be confirmed, reported and straightened out before he could legally sell the car, we made a deal, I paid a deposit, and 1 month later the carfax report was corrected by the state of Texas and I bought the car. So try to put together a chronological service history, try to get a hold of the last owner, and tell the dealer the problem on the carfax report.
