Funny you mention that. I just bought a 97 M3 and have the EXACT problem. I'm looking for answers also.

1997 M3 Does anyone have experience with cold brakes making a thud, like the pads are shifting in the caliper, or something in the strut is "popping" when applying the brakes in reverse?. This usually occurrs after a small jaunt in the forward direction, like when maneuvering to park. Dealer cannot replicate the noise everytime the car is in for service. It is not the driveline realease noise you cet when declutching. Thanks in advance.
