Yes, this is correct. There are many occasions which i have seen that a car has been wrecked and does not show up on the title.
This is more popular in cases where the car has NOT been salvaged (meaning it has had more than 25% damage to the car itself). There are many occiasions where the car has been wrecked and even though it might have had frame damage, it would technically not be a salvage title... In this case, it would not show up on the title/carfax.
Also, on a few occasions, carfax laggs behind, where a car could potentially have frame damage, but it does not register it yet. I notice a lot of body shops and some dealers which buy and sell wrecked cars try to fix the car and sell it as soon as possible before the carfax can record any damage on the car. I have come across this on a few occasions up until now.
I am very skilled in the "art" of picking and choosing cars, or at least i'd like to think so. I have been doing it for over 15 years and to tell you the truth, its like a hobby. I use carfax as a resourse, but i dont live by it. If carfax says or doesnt say something, im not going to hold them to it. I mean, think about it, there are so many cars and there is no way they can possibly keep an accurate record of every one of them, so you must allow and or expect a margin of error.

But yes, a car could have been wrecked and carfax would not have recorded it. If an insurance company is not involved, or a lot of times, even if they are, it just wont be recorded on carfax.
