On the old BMW digest, a very knowledgable person reported that BMW's OEM glass manufacturer separates their products into 3 categories after inspection for optical quality: the flawless/near flawless ones go to the factory; the very good (but not quite in category 1) ones go to BMW dealers as replacements for factory glass; and the ok ones go to non-dealers. I would go to dealer or at least make sure one you're getting has no defects.

I have a '97 E36 M3, when i got in my car this mornning, i discovered a 7-8inch long crack on the wind shield, infront of driver seat.
Anyone knows how much it costs to have the glass replaced with a new one? i'm in the DC\VA area, anyone knows local places? thanks again.
