SUVs and Explorers in particular have taken a beating on resale because of the tire fiasco + gas prices going up. Ford sells 400,000+ Explorers a year so there are a lot of used ones out there. Of course I bought mine in June 2000 right before prices dropped - $11k for '94 Eddie Bauer w/ 80k miles.
'96 has very good safety features - ABS + dual airbags. Engines are solid, gas mileage sucks, and it won't win any races. Watch out for the tranny though. Fords shift rough when hard pressed and depending on the exact type of tranny in that particular car, it may be heading for replacement. Explorers can have weak trannys.
If the dealer is giving a warranty on it - even just 6 months - then they have confidence in that car. If no warranty, or just 30-60 days, take it to another dealer for a presale checkup ($75 or so) and they can research it's history, check it out and give you the low down on it.

Good luck,
