It is rare for someone to pay the List price for any car. New or used. (E46 M3 is the exception.) Trade in values are based on artifically inflated trades. For example (I've experienced this every time I've traded in a car.) You negotiate the final trade difference as $5,000. This is the amount of cash you'll need to come up with after you trade in your car. The dealer writes the contract with the car you purchase at full list price and "plugs in" the trade in value to come up with the $5,000 difference.
