I have a 97 M3/4 with 50,000 miles and I was feeling the same way. My car would wander and felt softer and seemed like there was too much roll. I thought it was time for new struts.

Try this first:
The best thing you can do to immediately improve your cars fell on the road is to check/set the tire pressures. I run 225/245 stock staggered setup with Pilot Sports and I put the fronts at 34 and the rears at 36 and Wow! what a difference. Throttle response felt better, the car leaned less, was more responsive in turns and all around felt more solid.

My 98 used to have unflappable control over high winds or bumpy road. Now is seems that half of my steering effort is to correct for wind and bad road conditions rather than turning. Steering wheel pulls with every nuance of the road. What to do?
