I am sorry, probably my posting wasn't too clear and I must have confused some of you. What I meant was, the car I am seeing does NOT have the //M stripes on the seats, the seats themselves are not like the ones in the regular M3, they are "softer" they are not as stiff as the ones on the other model, and do not have as much shoulder support. The car does however, have the original BMW rear spoiler as well as the HK stereo system. It has the chrome around the levers and the door side panels are also leather. There is wood trim just above the glove box as well as around the shifter and door panels. It is a 2dr coupe. Beautiful car!
Thanks to all of you who pulled those car fax reports for me. It turns out, the car is a 97, as I suspected (production date: 06/97) so I will try to negotiate the deal later this week...
Thanks again.

The LUX does not have the colored ///M stripes on the seats. was this one a 4-dr or 2-dr? I am not sure if this is a real lux. Does it have chrome door release levers on the insides of the doors? I have a 97 M3/2 5-spd lux and have driven my friend's 97 M3/2 5-spd non-lux and I can say there are no mechanical differences. The lux came with no spoiler and the HK stereo was still an option. I bought my car a year ago with 60k miles for $29.9k. All options, less the heated seats and HK stereo.

Hi all,
I am currently looking to buy an M3. I found a very nice silver-on-black-leather car, but the price seems too good to be true. I saw the car and test drove it. I was with a friend of mine who has a 97 M3 and we thought the car was in excellent condition. No visual clues of body work/overspray, or any damage. Are there any major problem areas I should pay particular attention? The car needs new tires and an oil change as the service light was on.
Another major concer I have is, are there any mechanical differences between the M3 luxury package and the regular M3? I have noticed the seats, the //color stripes on the seats, the wood trim, the HK stereo, the power seats, and the factory BMW rear spoiler.
Were there any changes in the suspension, gearing, or most importabtly, performance?
Any help you guys can give me will be greately appreciated, as someone already said, I am about to spend what could easily be, a house down payment...
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge...
R
