When I posted that an independent dealer was selling an 98 M3 with 31,000 mi and the CarFax showed 73,000 mi, some people said "don't walk, run away from that car". Others reported similar "errors" and suggested checking further.

It turns out that the car was titled new with 6 mi and 7.5 mo later it showed an entry of 73,000 mi by the emissions inspection. Not believing that any normal person would put 10,000 mi/mo on their car, I had a BMW history run on the VIN. It shows the car had 9,300 mi two months AFTER the CarFax report entry of 73,000 mi. So the entry should have benn 7,300 (not 73,000) by the emission inspection guy (must have gotten a little finger-happy and let an extra "zero" fly). This makes sense because according to this I figured the previous owner probably put 1000 mi/mo on the car (not 10,000 mi/mo). The car now has 31,000+ mi and is about 32 mo old since titling new (further proof of my 1000 mi/mo theory).

So there you have it. Don't always believe the CarFax reports. They are not gospel. They are a good guide to make you ask some questions, however.
