built into key. Can't start with out it. You can't just go to Ace Hardware and have a new key made, must order from the dealer.

Luckily the car is insured. I may consider buying a new one.

And the keys?

Most likely it was stolen by the previous owner
or someone stoled it w/a tow truck. There's no way
you can start E36 bmw's by plier and screwdriver.
