Removing Baffles...question for experts. (archive)

I used to have a 1992 Stealth R/T Turbo...I am not sure if what you guys are talking about is the same thing, but I was told to remove some "baffles" in this car...they were in the airbox before the mass airflow sensor, and they looked like honeycomb aluminum things..well, to make a long story short I removed the baffles, and so did my friend with a Eclipse GST. Both of our cars INSTANTLY ran like crap. The idle became INCREDIBLY rough, and we ended up having to put them back in. The cars, of course, ran perfect again.

My thoughts are that these "baffles" smoothed out the airflow over the Mass Airflow Sensor.

Is this the same thing in the M3 and does my theory sound correct?
