The "baffles" and the water ingestion protection plate (wipp) are 2 different things. The wipp is simply a black piece of plastic located behind the kidney grill that partially blocks the airbox inlet and is designed to keep water from splashing directly into the airbox. Removal of the plate takes all of 5 minutes and has a positive impact on performance at high speeds. I have done this mod, along w/ an ECIS intake, and found it to have had zero impact on water ingestion. I've checked the airbox and filter after hours of high-speed use in heavy rain storms and found no moisture whatsoever. The "baffles" are inside the airbox inlet tubing and are designed to eliminate intake noise. I don't know what, if any, impact the baffles have on turbulence. I have not heard of any problems associated with thier removal.
I used to have a 1992 Stealth R/T Turbo...I am not sure if what you guys are talking about is the same thing, but I was told to remove some "baffles" in this car...they were in the airbox before the mass airflow sensor, and they looked like honeycomb aluminum things..well, to make a long story short I removed the baffles, and so did my friend with a Eclipse GST. Both of our cars INSTANTLY ran like crap. The idle became INCREDIBLY rough, and we ended up having to put them back in. The cars, of course, ran perfect again.

My thoughts are that these "baffles" smoothed out the airflow over the Mass Airflow Sensor.

Is this the same thing in the M3 and does my theory sound correct?
