Formula 1 uses paddle shifters as they were allowed semi-automatic gearboxes. Starting the last race, however, they opened the restrictions on electronics, so they can actually use fully automatic gearboxes if they want, although many drivers have opted not to yet. (these will still use the electro-hydraulic clutches, no torque converter like street cars or the so called semi-auto boxes many street cars use)

Champ cars (the ones in the movie) use fully manual shifter, like street cars with clutch pedal and all.

in the movie, they were shifing on the ovals each time they wanted to pass.
in reality on ovals, they just brake a little and let up as the go into turns and then floor it as the exit onto the straights. they get position to pass by drafting, and getting the slingshot effect from less drag as they are in the other car's slipstream.

the shifting in the movie is purely for show, therefore stupid! IMO.

plus they don't race in Germany or in France.
That was part of the b.s. i was talking about.
