that's about all I can think of other than is the belt fully seated on all the pulleys (possible misalignment).

I wouldn't use the WD-40 method. It's not only a lubricant, but it'll pull moisture away from the rubber of the belt reducing it's "rubbery-ness".

Try just replacing the belts with OEM bmw ones.
