The only chart that covers the M3 says it's for 1998 2.5L, 2.8L, and 3.2L (M3). . . It shows 4 wires connected to the "Hot Film Air Mass Meter".

Pin 1) BRN/ORG: GND
Pin 2) YEL: "HOT FAM MTR"
Pin 3) RED/WHT: POWER
Pin 4) BLK: GROUND

The main difference I see between pins 1 and 4 is that 1 seems to be tied to chassis ground, and 4 is tied to a pin on the Engine Control Module labeled ground.
