Tire weight vs. wheel weight??? (archive)

We always talk about how much a certain wheel weighs, polar moment of inertia, 18" rims vs. 17" rims, etc. I recently heard somebody say that TIRES of the same size, but different brands, can vary by 5 lbs or more! And that Yoko's are a lot heavier than P-Zero's, etc. Obviously, such weight differences, if they indeed exist, would have a much more profound impact on performance than a few pounds in rim weight or a half inch in rim radius. Can anybody shed any light on this?
TIA
