Ok I'm pretty sure the '97 M3 comes with 225/45/17 in front and 245/40/17 in the rear. That means the wheel diameters are 24.972 in front and 24.716 in the rear. If you go to a 245/45/17 your increasing that diameter to 25.681 but if you go to 255/40/17 youll be at 25.031. Between the two I would pick the 255/40/17 set because it wont jack up the back of your car an extra inch (only .315). If you want my honest oppinion, switch over to Another manufacturer that makes the 245/40/17 tire and keep your setup the same. then when its time to get tires again get all 4 the same. just my thoughts though.
