For starters they both are speced at the same output. The 3.2 is supposed to have slightly more torque. Some say the 3.2 engines actually put out 250hp rather than the claimed 240.

However the 95 is easier to get that 270hp out of with a few mods like chip and cold air intake. The 96+ has the OBD2 computer. I dont think there is any BMW that has cheap (inexpensive)parts. It seems that the parts makers think we are all overflowing with cash. I for one am not. With proper maintenance the COO will be reasonable. If you abuse your car it will abuse your wallet.

I currently have a '96 3000GT VR-4 and I'm selling it and moving into an M3. I am wondering what the differences between the '95 and '96 models are, besides the obvious engine size difference. I'm really interested in things like reliability cost of ownership etc. Also I'd really like to bump my M3 up to about 270hp and I was wondering what it would take to do that in each.
