I'm buying a bike too.. what a coincidence :)

Ok... if you want reliable, you wanna go with one of the big 4.
Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda.

My first bike was a 600... which some would say is a bit much, but if you're careful, it could be your first AND last bike. They are very powerful, so unless you just like the huge torque for cruising, 600-750 should do just fine.

Suzuki GSXR 600
Made for racing, very stiff suspention, very durable fuel injected motor... low maintenance.. but VERY stiff for "daily driver"

Honda CBR 600F4
Made for street, soft.. reliable (honda) NON-fuel injected unless you get the '01 F4i (but that's a bit more than you wanna spend). awesome as a first bike... hondas have nice resale value in the automotive world... same may translate to the bikes

Yamaha YZF-r6 (My personal favorite.. which I will buy)
Best of both worlds... made for street, but can be track'd if you adjust the suspention a bit. also reliable, very awesome stopping power on them.... very nice overall bike.

Kawasaki Ninja 6R or whatever... wasn't made in '01 (and I'm buying new)... BUT..
They have AWESOME reports for '00, even better than Yamaha.

Anyway.. if you want the fastest, Suzuki... if you want nice comfy... whatever... Honda... if you want the best of both worlds, Yamaha or Kawasaki...

also, check out motorcycle.com (I believe) they have reviews on the 600 class....

Drive safely, dont get killed!
