Help with info on '97-'99 M3 (archive)

I am new to this board, but have been on E46 M3 and E46 3-Series boards.

I have been considering a new M3 (on the list, but can't justify the $$), new 330ci, and possibly the 2002 IS300 Manual. I am now thinking that an E36 M3 might be the way to go.

Can anyone tell me if there are any major differences between the '97-'99 M3s?

I will not be buying until this fall (just finishing grad school and will start work late summer *and*, importantly, will be moving into a house where I will have a garage - don't want to park it on the city streets when I am in an apt until my place is finished). So, I am in the information gathering/shopping stage.

Will be a regular on this board until I make up my mind and am able to purchase.
