I have a 97 M3 and my brake light never came on. The wire connecting to the brake sensor was worn thru some how. I replaced the brake sensor, pads and rotors. You can check the rotors yourself. Mine was very grooved and you can feel how much the rotors have been worn by feeling the edges.
