Prices are generally higher in the Bay area (I'm from So Cal), but $36k seems about $5k too high. I just bought a 97 (M3/4, wht/blk, 5-sp) with 76k miles for $23k. Even w/ mileage adjustment, a car w/ normal mileage should be around $27-$31k, depending on location. Admittedly, 5-speed sedans are fairly hard to come by, but if you're patient, they are out there.

There's a blk/blk at a local lot asking $28k, one in FL asking $26k, a 98 wht/grey back east for $28k, one wht/blk near Oakland for $26-29k. I think paying a premium for one in your color and from an acquaintance is not a problem, but that just seems a bit too much of a premium. $31-32k would be my max for that car, just MHO.
