As a fellow Bay Area resident, the price of $36.5k is actually not THAT bad. I just bought a '99 silver M3 CONVERTIBLE, every option, 25k miles for $39,995. Allison BMW and Eastbay BMW were selling pretty much the same car for $44-$45k. One dreamer was selling his for $48k. I feel that I got a pretty decent deal for my car. Paid $2k for an extended 6 year 100,000 warranty. $36.5 is a tad high...I think $33k-$34k is a decent price. Of course, you can look around and find '97, '98, and '99 models with similar mileage and specs for $27-$32k on eBay, through cars.com, and so on. You just have to deal with the shipping costs (if you find somebody in the East Coast or something....$1000).

Just check www.cars.com. Pop in BMW, M3, and type in the distance from your location. You'll definitely get 50-75 examples. That's what I did when I was researching prices. Again, I think $36.5k is a tad high...maybe $34-$35. Remember, there's plenty of 97-99 M3s around, since some owners are trading in for the 2001 model. Since January, I have seen a huge increase in the number of M3s for sale. Maybe it would be to your advantage to wait a little. Who knows, maybe the same Estoril blue model you're looking for will pop in during the summer.
