I know this must sound like heresy but I drove and liked one so much that I bought a slushbox sportwagon last month. While it is softly suspended and the rubber isn't that aggressive, it sure is fun surprising folks with acceleration once it gets on boost. Beside, folks like Cobb Tuning are offering upgrade packages like their 280 hp for like $2800 and are in process of developing a bigger turbo setup to be available this fall for around $5000 said to put out about 320 hp. Anyhow, the WRX will hold the kids better than the E36 M3 and if I want to go for handling, I'll just have to take the M3 with Bilsteins and H & R springs.
I was going to get an E46 M3 from Cutter Motors in early May but had second thoughts with all the bad publicity on the board and information from friends in the BMWCCA about oil burning, tranny and differential issues, etc so I let that go and will settle for the WRX til I feel confident about the E46 M3.
The only problem is that many Subaru dealers aren't familiar with performance oriented cars and enthusiasts and may not cooperate with you in getting needs met. Example is I asked about installing a turbo timer and boost gauge in the car and they seemed to not know why I wanted these things on the car.
