They do go bad, but not very often. If your mechanic thinks its ok, dont worry about, just live with it. My mechanic originally quoted me somewhere near $300 to replace the whole vanos unit, but after pulling it all apart to inpect, he told me it would be a 1/2 hour job, and much less than $300, incl parts.

They are fed by oil pressure, and one theory I have is that after a lot of miles the oil pump gets weaker. Then, in the transition period between idle and engaging the vanos, it sits in limbo too long due to low pressure, and rattles around. Still, I have been told not to worry. When my engine goes due to low oil pressure, I get a new one! As long as it is in the next 20,000 miles. :)

VANOS, eh? I wonder, is my VANOS tired? Defective? Is this thing gonna die on me and detonate my engine while in the middle of nowhere?
How much would this cost me to replace, anyway? I'm not a mechanic. I have a feeling replacing it would cause much pain. Is this phenomena that common??
