If you don't want to cut, MB Quart has a 3 way component system specifically for the E36 3 series that is a drop-in replacement from what I could tell. The cost was about $420, this from a web store, too.
Me? I'm keeping my M3 for a looooong time, so I don't have any qualms about cutting, so I would look at a 6-1/2 inch speaker for down low. 7 inch is available, but generally expensive as it's from the higher-end makers (Diamond is one I think).
Go to Ben Liaw's big links page 2, look for Dean's car page, he has 2 Fosgate 10s mounted under the rear deck, no box. Interesting, and that's the direction I'm going, but I'm (probably) installing 12s since I was quoted a silly-low price for JL Audio 12W3s...And I already have 1 12W3, and it's good enough for kick ass bass and polite bass (to me).
The easiest way, IMHO, is the JL stealth boxes. They won't pound the heck out of you, but I've yet to read or hear of anyone complaining about them.
Also - one thing you *might* want to try before chucking the factory speakers - try upgrading the amp. I just last night pulled apart my brother's old Harman Kardon amp - that thing was WEAK looking. You need a new amp anyway - get a decent 4 channel and see if it sounds any better - I bet it will.
