Speedometer stopped working!? (archive)

I have already searches the archives and haven't found any answers. I was driving for approx. an hour when the problem happened. While driving, the speedometer went to 0, the mpg meter went to 0, and then the check engine light came on. After that, the odometer wasn't registering any mileage. I have had it happen twice before. After the car was shut down overnight, it worked fine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
