I would like to know if there is any way to be certain if my car is running OBD-I or OBD-II. I assume that I am running OBD-I since I have a 95 M3 (build date 6/94); however, I am unable to get any self diagnostic flash codes when I try to run the 'turn to on - depress accellerator five times' procedure. Nothing happens - which I understand is what happens with cars equipped with OBD-II.

Any insight?
Thanks!

I had a 5/94 build date 95 M3 I'm 100% sure you have an OBD-I car. What I'm not sure about is if the 5 pump accl trick works on this car. Anyhoo there's people that can't do this to save their life, or in your case (hopefully) the car will not give a code that way and you may have to purchase a code reader. Something wrong with the car?

Thanks for the info - my next trick is to see if it is possible to get flash codes from my car. I can get the Instrument Panel to do its test, and can get the OBC to give me a readout of the fault summary (01 02 000 E2 - 02 03 000 E2 - 03 05 000 E1 - 04 06 000 E1) Now I just need to learn what it all means??

Thanks!
