I know its a hell of a car. I know it's amazing, it sets the bar so much higher than almost anything else. But what are most people going to do with that extra performance? Driving schools? Stoplight races? Impress women? :P

The only reason I can see to own a 911 is if you are a privateer and going to race it. Even then, I'd be strongly tempted to start with an e46 M3 for a lot less money.

Just $0.02 from someone who just sold an e46 M3 to purchase a '95 M3 plus a second car. ;)
