Looking at it from a completely different angle... Some (many/most) people use their M3 as a year round daily driver, not just a summer car... Which brings me to my next issue on the subject. Having learned to drive in snow country I am a firm believer that automatic cars are dangerous to have on the roads, except when they are dry. Start to loose it on an ice patch or wet leaves in an auto, and your choices are:
crash, crash worse, hit the brakes and skid into a pole and crash, or hit the gas have the thing spin the wheels think you need to upshift go into the wrong gear killing the added torque you were trying to use to recover and crash, or crash.
I'm tainted, I know... =)
Now, with the new additions of traction control (includeing brakeing systems) some of the stopping issues you used to have with autos in the snow are downplayed... but I still don't think it's the same as a stick.
And, with the new "sportstronic" style transmissions with paddle shifters Ferrari, Porche and others are going to, the argument can be made for an Automatic... But those transmissions are not your standard automatic... And to be honest, when driving in a normal aggressive way on the street, not pushing the car at insane speeds that require you to keep both hands on the wheel in order to control the car, the paddle shifters are still not as fun as a good ol' stick... That type of transmission has a place, for sure, but you will be hard to find that place while staying even close to obeying the law... =)
Just my $0.02 on the subject. (you asked, heh)...
