Really no advantages in a synchromesh transmission such as in all modern cars, but I do it for the hell of it anyway. It's fun. :-)

When downshifting, push in the clutch. Put the shifter in neutral. Blip the throttle. Push in the clutch again. Put the shifter into the gear you want to be in, let out the clutch. It sounds tedious but you can do it quite quickly if you practice at it.

It is a little easier on the synchro's but not really enough to make a difference.
