M3 or 911 or ? for MLC car (archive)

I'm shopping for my "mid life crisis" car. I'm looking to spend around $25K and want something that is damn fun to drive and/or is fairly luxurious. I'd like to use it on my daily commute through LA (so the AC should work), and my 5 year old son often rides with me. Top on my list has been either a late 80's Carrera or early 90's 964 (911). Thing I'm worried about are maintenance costs and non-functional AC. Getting an M3 has been suggested, and it seems like this might win on a number of counts: fast, fun, luxurious (leather, sunroof, good AC). I know all of the potential issues with 911's...is there a FAQ out there for buying an E36? And is this a good choice? Am I missing other suspects?

Getting a newer car is not optimal, as I'd like to be able to sell whatever I get in a year or so if we decide to move. So getting something that has already largely depreciated is ideal.
