Well I can't help with the sanity part...not my specialty ;)

Mis-shifts are ALL about technique.
Now there are products which will remove the small amount of transmission movement (320i transmission bushings, UUC Enforcer rings, JT Designs transmission brace), but they wont stop you, the driver, from ham-fisting the gearlever into the wrong spot.
the two most comman techiques are:
1. hold the shift knob between the fingertips, like you were holding and egg.
2. shift 1-2 with the palm towards your body, and 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 with your palm away from your body.

Ever watch in-car camera work of race drivers. You'll never see them *slam* the shift lever. There changes may be quick, but they don't grab the lever like it was a chicken neck they are about to snap !
